  • Tactile’s Latest Model is the Richard Rogers-Designed Maverick

At long last, the latest folder from Tactile Knife Co. is here – well, nearly here. The Maverick not only introduces a new lock into the Tactile corral, it’s also the company’s second model produced with an outside collaborator – in this case custom maker Richard Rogers.

The Maverick’s blade brings other Rogers designs to mind

Even taking into account the fixed blade DeadEye, the Maverick is the biggest knife in the Tactile lineup to date. Its 3.6-inch drop point, with its long, low-slung swedge, echoes the elegant stylings of Rogers’s custom designs, while also lining up nicely with the pared down cleanliness that has defined the in-house Tactile knives up to this point. Opened with a pair of thumb studs, this blade is made from MagnaCut (Tactile was among the earliest adopters of the stuff, at least in the production realm). The bigger size expands the capabilities of the Maverick, but overall, like the Bexar and Rockwall before it, it comes across first and foremost as an everyday carry knife.

Tactile calls the locking mechanism here the Crossbar Lock. At a glance you can see that it’s another descendant of the Axis Lock, which in our enthusiast realm are prized for their strength, reliability, and, of course, fidget factor. Tactile continues its commitment to producing as much of the knife in-house as they can, and have said that the only components on the Maverick made outside of their Dallas, Texas facility are the washers and lock springs.

The Maverick [right] compared to the Rockwall

Obviously the Maverick has been graced with Tactile’s signature texturing, which gives the contoured scales just the right amount of traction while not being overly aggressive on either fingers or pocket. These contoured scales can be made from either titanium, as was the case with the Bexar and Rockwall, or from Micarta, which comes in at $100 less than the ti model. Tactile lists the weight at 3.91 oz., and have given the Maverick a similar clip to the one on the Rockwall, albeit mounted differently.

Tactile says the Mavericks are expected to start rolling off the line in early 2023. As was the case with the Rockwall back in the day, they have opened a waitlist for the knife; when your number comes up you have a window in which to make the purchase, which will be subsequently shipped when it’s ready.
