Maniago maker Fox Knives brought a pair of interesting models to a little trade show called SHOT last week. The Vulpis sees the company exploring multifunctional knife concepts, while the New Smarty is a comprehensive edit of an older, discontinued model.

Vulpis

Here’s an interesting 2023 project: Fox is crafting a take on the knife based multitool, a category by and large defined by Victorinox’s output. As the term “knife-based multitool” implies, the Vulpis is still first and foremost a pocket knife, with a main blade done up in a modified sheepsfoot shape. The blade will come in two different size classes, and in two different steels: N690 or M390, the latter super steel being paired with the more luxe handle materials (described below).

Meanwhile, the other tools, depending on which configuration you pick up, include: a wood saw, scissors, and both bottle opener and can opener claw arms, each with driver heads on their tips. Handle material for the N690 model is aluminum, while the M390 flavor comes in either carbon fiber or titanium.

New Smarty

The New Smarty is a revised version of the original Fox Smarty, a tactically-inflected single action automatic knife. That original design was simple, humble, and rugged, with G-10 scales and an N690 steel blade.

The big change on the New Smarty is its new profile: it’s cleaner, a bit more stylish, and made from aluminum instead of G-10. The stout drop point blade is still made from N690 (at least in the first versions Fox shared with the public; it remains to be seen if there are premium versions here as with the Vulpis), and still opened with the press of a button. Behind the button you’ll see a toggle for engaging the secondary safety as well.

Fox says the Vulpis will be ready to release by March, but haven’t given a definitive date for the New Smarty yet.
