The Russian Military has deployed S-300 air defence systems in the Moscow region to repel a simulated enemy air attack on major military and administrative facilities in the capital, according a report by the Russian Defence Ministry. “In the Moscow Region, a training exercise took place involving the personnel of the anti-aircraft missile brigade of the Western Military District, which was designed to repel air attacks on major military, industrial and administrative facilities,” the ministry elaborated in an official statement. Ground units were simultaneously deployed to repel a simulated attack by enemy sabotage units, with over 150 personnel and more than 30 weapons systems and other pieces of equipment being involved. The exercise comes amid reports of concerns that Ukraine and its Western supporters could attempt an attack on the Russian capital, and follow the release of images of Pantsir short range air defence combat vehicles being deployed to guard the Russian Defence Ministry’s Moscow headquarters.

The air defence network protecting Moscow is widely considered among the world’s most formidable, and uniquely includes very long ranged missiles from the A-135 defence system capable of neutralising ICBMs and satellites. S-300s play multiple roles in Russia’s air defence network, with the newer S-300V4 currently in production providing a highly mobile long range interception capability specialised in intercepting missile attacks, while older and much shorter ranged S-300PS/PT systems currently being phased out of service provide a medium ranged capability. The S-300PS/PT is currently being replaced by the newer S-350 system
