Crimestoppers are an independent charity that gives people the power to speak up to stop crime through their 100% anonymous reporting service. This National Home Security Month they’re here to highlight how they’re working across the UK to show how everyone can make a big difference when it comes to keeping communities safer together.

It’s estimated there’s a burglary every 40 seconds in the UK, but what would you do if you knew or had suspicions about who was behind one in your area?

The obvious answer
is to get in touch with the police, but sometimes it can feel like that’s not
an option. If the person behind the crime lives locally, or is someone you run
into often, you might be worried that if you go to the police that they’ll find
out it was you who spoke up, that you’ll have to give evidence, or simply that
you’re not sure if your information is enough to make a difference.

That’s where
Crimestoppers comes in.

As an
independent charity, we believe everyone has the right to feel safe from crime,
wherever they live. That’s why for over 30 years we’ve provided our unique 100%
anonymous reporting service, available 24/7, 365 days a year, giving people the
power to speak up, safely and securely, about the crimes that impact their
communities.

How do we keep
you anonymous?

We know it’s a big claim, but guaranteeing the protection and 100% anonymity of the public is at the core of everything we do. Whether you get in touch on the phone and talk to one of our trained team or fill in our secure online form, we never trace or record your number or IP address, and we never ask who you are or any personal details – even if you told us accidentally, we wouldn’t record it.  Our team never judge you on how you know about a crime, they’re just here to listen to what you know, and pass it on for you. You can learn more here.

What happens to
your information?

Once you’ve made
your report, our team ensure there’s nothing identifiable that could link back
to you, then send it on to the appropriate police force to act upon, so even
though you’re anonymous, your calls still make a big difference. Around 10
people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to
Crimestoppers, and since we were founded, we’ve been responsible for more than
151,000 people being arrested and charged with a crime, and over £139 million
worth of stolen goods being recovered!

Keeping
communities safer together

This National
Home Security Month we’re launching our new #SafeStreet campaign highlighting
how when streets and their residents up and down the UK work together, everyone
benefits. Through top home safety tips, to how to get involved in volunteering
and community schemes, we all have the power to make a Safe Street a reality,
so that the only thing getting raided this autumn is the fridge, and the only
thing you’ll lose is an hour’s sleep when the clocks change.

Know something about a burglary near you? We take on average 100 reports a month on UK burglaries, and your information could be key in solving a crime. Click to see the ways to get in touch.
